Do you know how to choose the right printer cartridge for your printing habits? One of the frustrations many people have when they purchase a printer cartridge is that they purchase the cartridge with the expectation that it will last them for a long time, only to learn that after a few weeks or months, they need to replace the cartridge that they just purchased.

So how can you ensure that you will get the best value for money when purchasing your next printer cartridge? Here are a few things that you should consider.

There’s more than one type of printer cartridge.

Actually, there are three main types of printer cartridges that you will use in your printer. These will be the starter printer cartridge, the standard yield printer cartridge and the high yield printer cartridge.

Starter printer cartridges

These are the printer cartridges that come with the printer when it is purchased. These cartridges typically have a much lower yield, which often surprises customers as they feel like their printer ran out of ink very quickly.

Many consumers aren’t aware of this when they first purchase their printer. They expect the printer cartridge to have the same yield as the standard or even high-yield cartridge.

Standard yield printer cartridges

The standard yield printer cartridge has the standard amount of printer ink within the cartridge and should print a set amount of pages at a cost that is standard in the industry. The cost is typically higher than high-yield printer cartridges, however they are an ideal option for people that print infrequently.

This is because the ink starts to dry once it has been opened. Print cartridges from OEMs usually need to be used within 6-24 months to ensure that they still function, otherwise the ink from the cartridge may dry out.

High-yield printer cartridges

A high yield printer cartridge contains more ink than a standard yield printer cartridge. This allows the printer to print more pages at a lower cost per page. A high-yield printer cartridge usually has a higher retail cost. However, if you use more than 2 ink cartridges of the same colour in a period of more than 6 months or more than 2 toners in a period of 2 years, you will definitely save more money by buying high yield cartridges for your printer.

What are some of the other things that will affect the printing yield?

There are several variables to consider when it comes to assessing the printing yield. Some of these include:

  • The paper that’s being used.
  • The content and the type of document that is being printed.
  • The printer type.
  • The print mode and the driver setting.
  • The software application that’s being used. (Source)
